Tonight I tried to shoo a moth out of my bathroom back into the night air- “go moth, youre just going to die in here! Go off to do whatever it is that you do out there.” And then I had some faint memory of third grade science class or something that some species of moths only eat in the caterpillar stage, and then their whole adult lives are consumed with finding a mate (rather like people?) for the propagation of the species.
And then (this must be glass of wine number two causing me to get philosophical here), but what then does the moth do after mating? Its fulfilled its entire purpose. Like they can go around doing other enjoyable activities, find meaningful hobbies, like blogging etc. Can there find pleasure and meaning in other ways as well? They just propagate the species and that’s all. But then, what does the moth care about propagating the species? Why should that individual moth care if the species lives on beyond itself? But then, I guess moths don’t worry too much about asking existential questions like that. They just exist.
